EXPLOSION-PROOF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT: REGULATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

News
Materiale elettrico antideflagrante

In potentially hazardous areas like chemical industries, mining, oil platform or pipelines where flammable gases, vapours or dust are present, the possibility of explosions or fire is very high.

The use of explosion-proof electrical equipment is essential to ensure maximum safety in the workplace. In this article, we will explore the characteristics of the explosion-proof material, regulations and certifications that regulate the industry.

WHAT IS EXPLOSION-PROOF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT?

The explosion-proof electrical system and all electrical components with explosion protection are designed to be used in environments with “explosive atmospheres” or where there are flammable gases, vapours or powders.

In these contexts, even a small electric spark could cause an explosion, so the explosion-proof material is designed to prevent the formation of sparks or overheating that could trigger explosions.

INTERNATIONAL REGULATION AND CERTIFICATION

The use of the explosion-proof material is ruled by different international regulations and standards, which ensure the maximum safety.

Among the most important and internationally recognised standards and certifications is worth mentioning:

ATEX (Atmosphères Explosibles): this European legislation establish the requirements for machines, instrumentation and electrical components in general, used in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The ATEX legal framework in Europe is summarised in two directives: Dir. 1999/92/EC and Dir. 2014/34/EU.

IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres): international certification system based on IEC standards and accepted in many parts of the world.

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) e CSA (Canadian Standards Association): certification for explosion-proof material in North America.

NEC (National Electrical Code): it is a US code that establish specific requirements for safe electrical installation in hazardous areas.
